How to calculate cubic metres (CBM) for sea freight
CBM is the unit behind most sea freight prices. Calculating it correctly avoids surprises.
The formula
CBM = length × width × height in metres. A 60 × 40 × 50 cm carton is 0.6 × 0.4 × 0.5 = 0.12 CBM; 50 such cartons make 6 CBM.
Common mistakes
- Using product dimensions instead of outer carton dimensions.
- Forgetting to convert centimetres to metres.
- Trusting supplier figures without measuring; we measure cartons on receipt in Yiwu.
Weight versus volume
LCL is usually charged per CBM or per tonne, whichever is greater (W/M). Very heavy goods may be charged by weight.
FAQ
